Meghana Vaidyeswaran’s journey is nothing short of inspiring. Armed with a strong foundation in Civil Engineering, she dared to follow her lifelong passion for historic buildings and emerged as a visionary conservation professional in the United Kingdom. Today, as Conservation Manager at Hirst Conservation Ltd, she stands at the forefront of preserving architectural heritage with both technical mastery and profound cultural insight.
The MSc in Conservation of Historic Buildings at the University of Bath was truly transformative. It fundamentally reshaped how Meghana perceives and approaches historic structures. Moving far beyond her technical engineering lens, the programme immersed her in a holistic understanding of heritage, exploring cultural and archaeological significance, heritage management, advanced material science, and the philosophical underpinnings of conservation. This powerful shift has become the cornerstone of her professional excellence.
The skills and experiences she gained at Bath have proven instrumental in her current high-impact role. Blending her prior expertise managing large-scale infrastructure projects in India with the rigorous academic training and scientific research from her MSc dissertation on historic material behaviour, Meghana has mastered the rare and essential art of balancing theory with practice. Her work now reflects a rare depth of knowledge and leadership that sets new standards in the field of heritage conservation.
Transitioning to a new country as an international student came with its own set of formidable challenges, navigating different cultures, time zones, and an entirely new academic environment. There were moments of self-doubt, yet Meghana’s unwavering perseverance, dedication, and inner resilience carried her forward. She speaks with deep gratitude about the approachable and encouraging faculty at the University of Bath, who genuinely valued her ideas and professional background. Her classmates and the vibrant, multicultural community became a powerful support system, transforming what could have been an isolating journey into one of genuine belonging, collaboration, and lasting friendships.
To Meghana, being a Proud Ambassador is deeply personal. It represents the remarkable journey of growth, resilience, passion, and determination forged through facing and overcoming real challenges. She hopes her story will powerfully inspire other international students, especially women who have taken career breaks or come from interdisciplinary backgrounds, to believe that they too can pursue their dreams and build meaningful, fulfilling careers in their chosen fields.
Some of her most cherished memories from Bath capture the magic of student life: peaceful walks through the historic city and along the canal, where living history surrounded her every day; enriching field trips; late-night discussions with peers; and the rich, multicultural friendships that continue to warm her heart.
