Grateful Students, Proud Ambassadors: My Heartfelt Thank You to the University of Bath

By Mariam Amhaz Founder of Global Path Connections Ltd
MSc Conservation of Historic Buildings, University of Bath

When reflecting on my time studying in the UK, one feeling rises above everything else for me: gratitude.

I came to the University of Bath as an international student with big dreams and a heart full of hope. What I discovered was far more than an education; I found a caring, supportive community that protected me, inspired me, and helped me grow into the professional I am today. That experience shaped not only my degree but the entire mission of my company, Global Path Connections Ltd.

Today, I publicly expresses my deep appreciation; and I invite every international student and graduate who has built a life in the UK to join me as Proud Ambassadors.

To the quiet heroes who made campus feel like home
I extend special thanks to the security teams, watchmen, and cleaning crew. Their 24/7 security presence and regular cleaning rounds in the dormitory common areas gave me peace of mind when I was far from home. They were the unseen foundation that allowed me to focus fully on my studies.

The campus that welcomed me every single day

The University of Bath’s beautiful greenery, well-cared-for animals, and peaceful tree-lined walks between classes lifted my spirits daily. The cafeterias and cafés offered tasty, affordable food with excellent Halal and vegetarian options. On-campus pricing was genuinely student-friendly, with affordable items, free second-hand goods, and even free donated food when needed.

The prayer rooms were thoughtfully designed and secure: clean, well-maintained, with two dedicated spaces; a smaller one for ladies and a larger classroom-sized mixed room; each with a good-sized bathroom. Access restricted only to Muslim students for safety showed real care and respect.

Facilities that supported my success

The library became a true sanctuary for me. Even during the busiest exam weeks, I could always find a comfortable seat. When rare books were needed for my thesis, the library team ordered and paid for them within hours. The smooth borrowing and returning system encouraged me to read widely and deeply.

The classrooms were spacious and modern, giving every student their own comfortable space to focus and create.

Professors who became true mentors

My professors went far beyond teaching — they became genuine mentors who helped shape my entire academic journey. I had regular meetings with Dr Jonathan Foyle, who mentored me, introduced me safely to the UK’s academic world, and was consistently supportive, encouraging, and motivating.

Professors Robert Proctor and Richard Ball strongly supported my academic approach of writing papers on historic sites from the Middle East that have not been well documented. Despite the challenges of working with less-documented sources, they gave me all the support and assistance I needed, showing unwavering belief in my research.

One moment that still moves me deeply occurred during a field trip to Dyrham Park, a historic National Trust site. When I mentioned I would need a prayer space for the full day, my professor immediately contacted the site manager and secured a clean, carpeted prayer room just for me. That single act of kindness and respect remains a powerful example of the supportive culture I experienced.

Constructive Feedback for Future Students

While I deeply appreciate the dedication of the security and cleaning teams, I was not impressed with certain aspects of the overall dormitory management. I know that many other students share similar concerns regarding the quality and consistency of the residential experience. I respectfully raise these points in the hope that the university will review and address them, so future students can enjoy an even stronger and more supportive living environment.

Additionally, the cash-free payment system in the cafeterias and cafés presented a real challenge for international students. Many of us struggled until we received and activated our UK banking cards. I respectfully suggest that the university review these processes and consider practical solutions; such as temporary alternative payment options or clearer guidance for new arrivals; so that future international students can settle in more smoothly and enjoy all campus services without unnecessary stress.

From gratitude to action: launching “Grateful Students, Proud Ambassadors”

These experiences; both the outstanding support and the areas that need attention; inspired me to found Global Path Connections Ltd and create its flagship initiative: Grateful Students, Proud Ambassadors.

Through this platform, my company celebrates the journeys of international students and graduates. It shares success stories, publicly thank the people and places that made them possible — including dedicated library teams, cafeteria staff, security and cleaning crews, prayer facilities, and inspiring professors; and positions graduates as proud ambassadors of their communities, their heritage, and the United Kingdom.

A message to every international student and graduate in the UK

I believe that anyone who has established themselves here; professionally or personally; is now in a powerful position.

Become an ambassador.

Share your gratitude.

Support the next generation.

Help others navigate the system with the same kindness you once received.

Your story can open doors, change lives, and strengthen the bridge between cultures.

I am living proof that one supportive university community can transform a life; and that one grateful heart can go on to help many more.

To the University of Bath, its faculty, staff, and entire support ecosystem: thank you from the bottom of my heart. Your dedication continues to inspire everything I do today.
